Project Description

Bags have been restricted in various cities for years because environmentally-preferable alternatives are readily available. Our reliance upon single-use plastic bags was fostered by the fossil fuel industry, which introduced the ubiquitous light-weight “carrier” bag. The allegedly reusable (multi-use) bags made of heavier gauge plastic were often not reused. And bags are made of film plastic, a material that has no markets. That means you can put the bags into your recycling bin, but the bags will be disposed as trash.

It made no sense to me that only some retailers were included in the bag ban. Why were home improvement stores, clothing and other retailers, farmers markets, hardware stores, and others excluded? This ordinance was intended to close that loophole.

The ordinance became effective for large stores (more than 26 employees) on January 23, 2023, and for all other stores on July 1, 2023
