Project Description
This report analyzed the environmental benefits and business impacts that would result from adoption of the more than a dozen proposed ordinances that would impose mandates and bans on a variety of plastic products; impose strict labeling requirements on packaging; require reusable versus disposable foodware for all dine-in meals; require refillable beverage containers; and more.
A key take-away from the report is that the fossil fuel industry identified “plastics” as the future more than half a century ago, and worked diligently to integrate plastics into daily life; plastics in effect became foundational to our convenience-driven lifestyles. Simultaneously, the industry fostered the idea that plastic was recyclable – meaning we could live somewhat guilt-free about the single-use plastic products we consumed. The deception about recyclability is still prevalent, drowning out until recently the fact that very little plastic has ever – or will be -recycled.
