Drafting of Ordinances, Resolutions, Proclamations
I offer my experience drafting City Council motions, municipal Ordinances, City proclamations and resolutions on a variety of solid waste topics. View my most recent work with the City of Los Angeles, including: Plastic straws on request (updated to include foodware accessories); Citywide ban on expanded polystyrene foodware, egg cartons, coolers & ice chests and shipping materials; Expansion of the ban on single-use plastic bags; Zero Waste at City Facilities and Events on City property.
For a private firm that consults with numerous municipalities, I drafted an “generic” ordinance to update existing municipal solid waste ordinances to ensure compliance with Senate Bill 1383, California’s organics diversion law.
Creating Outreach & Educational Materials
Do you need more effective marketing materials to get results? Combining extensive zero-waste knowledge with my several years of experience as a copywriter for a boutique Dallas ad agency I’m pleased to create effective, custom pieces to address your goals. Some recent examples of my work include:
- Green Power for Green L.A.™ program direct mail pieces for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), that generated a 2% response (subscription rate), about four times the average.
- All content (website, mailer) content for LADWP’s Solar Power and Recycling programs.

Zero Waste Event Planning
Integrating zero waste practices into events isn’t difficult – but it does require advance planning, an analysis to identify all involved parties, an understanding of common, wasteful practices and better options, resources for alternative products and, importantly, human behavior.

Establishing a Basic Office Recycling Program
This entails a tour of the office, obtaining basic information about your staff (number, work shifts, identifying staff in charge of purchases) and current collection system (who is the provider; what types and sizes of bins are in use and where, what materials are collected and how frequently); basic education for employees, and educational materials (a fact sheet, design for bin labels and flyers, email content).
Zero Waste Audits
Zero waste audits are revealing, as waste (trash) can expose inefficiencies. Has your organizations integrated basic practices such as restocking used for reusable supplies and having reusable foodware? Do you have a policy governing purchases, so that dollars are used for durable/upgradable equipment and unbleached paper products? Are systems in place for managing items such as spent toner cartridges and used tires? I can help your business find ways to be more sustainable, efficient and cost-effective.
