For a private firm that consults with numerous municipalities, I drafted an “generic” ordinance to update existing municipal solid waste ordinances to ensure compliance with Senate Bill 1383, California’s organics diversion law.

• Green Power for Green L.A.™ program direct mail pieces for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), that generated a 2% response (subscription rate), about four times the average.
• All content (website, mailer) content for LADWP’s Solar Power and Recycling programs.

Integrating zero waste practices into events isn’t difficult – but it does require advance planning, an analysis to identify all involved parties, an understanding of common, wasteful practices and better options, resources for alternative products and, importantly, human behavior.

This entails a tour of the office, obtaining basic information about your staff (number, work shifts, identifying staff in charge of purchases) and current collection system (who is the provider; what types and sizes of bins are in use and where, what materials are collected and how frequently); basic education for employees, and educational materials (a fact sheet, design for bin labels and flyers, email content).
